Some T'ai chi ch'uan student comments translated from the French to the best of my ability
"Excellent exercise for the body and the spirit. After a class I feel a
lot more relaxed." Marc Boudry, Buais.
"The classes allow me to learn to listen to my body and to feel more in
harmony while uncovering a series of movements that improve my energy
circulation. The slowness with which we learn the movements allows me to
truly become aware of my body - and all this in a lovely atmosphere." Julia Leservoisier.
"It is a true pleasure to join Katy and the group every week. An excellent
practice to maintain balance, find serenity and focus awareness. A big
thank you for this weekly recharge." Anne Lucas, St Hilaire du Harcouët.
"I particularly appreciate the detail and depth of the work in this style
of Tai Chi. I now know how to do my body and mind good while carrying out
my normal day to day movements which I also appreciate. Katy lets us work
in detail with the movements, taking care with every individual and she
always teaches with humor!" Hélène Alexandre-Jergon, St Hilaire du Harcouët.
"Complements other martial arts well bringing understanding and
progression." Thierry Dodard-Triguel, Milly.
"Much more emotional stability which makes daily life easier. Also a big
difference in my ability to fall asleep, now without anguish." Isabelle Prod’Homme, St Hilaire du Harcouët.
"The Tai Chi classes are very good for our bodies, and they relax us and
calm our minds/spirits, thank you." Germain et Clémence Brodin, St Hilaire du Harcouët.
"(I’m) relaxed after the Tai Chi." Béatrice Bourgoult, St Hilaire du Harcouët.
"The classes do my body a lot of good. I visualise perfectly the exercises
that empty my body/mind/spirit, thank you." Camille Hantrais,
Parigny.
What is Tai Chi Chuan?
Tai Chi is a series of meditative and self-healing movements based on
Chinese teachings over 6,000 years old, Tai Chi literally translates to
"The Grand Ultimate Way of Life" as taught through movement. Also a
Martial Art, Tai Chi is generally practiced as a non-contact,
non-competitive sport for focus, self-awareness, health and relaxation.
The slow, rhythmic movements are very effective in returning the skeletal
structure, muscles and organs to their natural alignment and for clearing
the mind.
As all names are a translation from the chineese and so dependent on
accent there is no correct spelling. Other spellings are taï chi, t’ai
chi ch’uan, taiji, taijiquan et taiji quan. The most common styles are
Chen and Yang. I trained in and now teach Wu style because it is the best
style for health and healing.
Wu Style Tai Chi (or Wu Chien style) remains one of the principle
traditional styles of taijiquan. The style is practiced by the Wu family,
and mosts famously by its founder Wu Ch’uan-yu (1834-1902) and his son Wu
Chien-Ch’uan (1870-1942).
Wu Chien Ch’uan past the knowledge onto Lui Hung Chieh who gave the lineage
to Bruce Kumar Frantziz. Bruce Kumar Frantziz developed the short form
from the traditional long form with the help and encouragement of his master
Lui Hung Cheih. It is the Wu Style short form bought to the West by Bruce
Frantzis that I teach in the weekly classes.

About the instructor Katy Hamlett
I have been learning Wu style taijiquan, chi gung (or chi gong, chi kung
or qigong), Nei Gung (or nei kung) and meditation for 18 years and teaching
for 14 years. I learned tai chi, chi gung, nei kung and meditation with
Bruce Frantzis. I trained with Bruce Kumar Frantzis in England, Greece and
the USA and qualified as an instructor in 1997. I was an instructor member
of the Tai Chi Union of Great Britain from 1997 to 2009 when I left for
France. I studied taï chi, chi kung and meditation regularly with
instructors Jamie Dibdin, David Klug, Chris Chapell, and Paul Cavel in the
UK.
I also trained in Chi kung Tui Na massage (or chi gung tui na or qigong tui
na) and Chi Nei Tsang internal organ massage to increase my sensitivity so
I could correct my students better. Chi kung Tui Na is a massage which frees
up the energy circulation of the body in a similar way to acupuncture or
shiatsu (releases chi or qi blockages) (lineage Bruce Kumar Frantzis), Chi
Nei Tsang is a massage therapy of the internal organs (lineage Mantak Chia).

In spring 1998 I had an article published in the journal
"Tai Chi Chuan" about my journey to becomming an instructor.
In april 2008 I was interviewed by DJ Chris Evans live on BBC Radio 2 Drivetime.
He asked all about Tai Chi and got Johny the sports presenters' impressions
after I had given him a short class at the studio.
In August 2011 I wrote an article for the Journal "Tai Chi Chuan", the official journal of the Tai Chi Union of
Great Britain about the Tai Chi and Push Hands Meeting "Rencontres Jasnieres 2011" held in Sarthe, near Le Mans.
In 1996 I established Brixton Tai Chi and proceeded to teach Tai Chi and Chi
Gung courses in London and Hertfordshire until I left the UK in 2009. I also
taught in charities and businesses (CAFOD et Presentation Housing Association)
a school for the deaf (Oak Lodge School), Hitchen college and in local
government offices in the London borough of Lambeth to reduce stress and
tension in employees and reduce staff absence. I worked with anorexic and
bolemic in and out patients with Riversmead Mental Health Trust to speed up
the process of accepting their physical bodies and so speeding recovery. I
taught nurses of the chronically ill simple exercises they could safely teach
to their patients with Prisma Health AG in London. At the moment I teach Tai
Chi in the salle communale in St. Symphorien Des Monts, 50640 in Normandy.
I would like to start some day time classes, private one on one lessons and
English language Tai Chi classes so do contact me if you would be interested
in these. They may be in my local town hall or yours, my house or yours.
I am interested in the healing side of Tai Chi and this is what I teach in
the weekly classes. I believe it is not how well you can do Tai Chi in a
class that has the biggest impact on health, it is knowing how to change your
everyday movements that improves health most. This is what I offer – a
different way of moving and being.
About the classes
The classes are a mixture of warm up exercises, relaxation and simple
movements. People who practise Tai Chi improve their balance so they have
less falls and accidents. Developing flexibility people stay agile and
active long into old age. Creating more space within the joints many joint
and back problems improve or heal. The classes are for ages 16 to 100.
Participants learn to relax their body and mind and how to move keeping
this relaxation. They learn to align their body correctly as nature intended
and to breathe correctly improving the health of your internal organs.
Breathing into their back and belly reduces stress and tension. Of course all
this will be learned within the slow gently movements of Tai Chi.
About you
You learn best happy and relaxed so don't try to hard to get it right,
play with the movements and laugh if you get it wrong! Enjoy the class.
Dress in loose comfortable clothing and trainers or slippers.
